Those of the disaffected youth who are articulate, however-for instance, the Beat or Angry young men-are quite clear about the connection: their main topic is the “system” with which they refuse to co-operate. It is strange that the obvious connections between them are not played up in the newspapers nor, in the rush of books on the follies, venality, and stifling conformity of the Organization, has there been a book on Youth Problems in the Organized System. Both are newsworthily scandalous, and for several years now both kinds of stories have come thicker and faster. In every day’s newspaper there are stories about the two subjects that I have brought together in this book, the disgrace of the Organized System of semimonopolies, government, advertisers, etc., and the disaffection of the growing generation. This isn’t your ordinary asylum, and these aren’t your ordinary patients.Īshford isn’t the sort of place you’re sent to get better, it’s the sort of place you’re sent to be forgotten…something I’m frequently reminded of from the moment I arrive. Or, at least, until I get to know the other inmates. The only person I’m a danger to is my brother Kemper for putting me in here in the first place. I’m a danger to myself and others -or so they say. I hear voices one time at my parents’ funeral, and suddenly I’m no longer suited to exist in the outside world. Sometimes we would hear them scream.īut never once did we venture inside the walls. Sometimes we would see them flicker by, dressed all in ghostly white. My brother Kemper and I used to sneak through the woods to try and catch a glimpse of the inmates on the other side of its high brick walls. The most obvious explanation for the rarity seems to be TBS' apparent ownership of the extended cut, as no other stateside platform has ever shown it. However, that release appears to already be out of print. In fact, the only home video release of the Needful Things three-hour cut came in early 2020, as a standard definition extra on a German Blu-Ray release of the film. Outside of sporadic cable airings on TBS since the 1990s, the extended cut isn't commercially available in the US, not to stream, rent, buy, or anything else. Over the years, the Needful Things extended cut has become a desired item for many King fans, if only due to its rarity. Heston did so, but stresses that the extended cut is not a director's cut, as he prefers the theatrical edit. TBS commissioned distributor Columbia Pictures and Heston to put together a miniseries edit that could air in a four-hour TV timeslot, adding back an hour of deleted scenes. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell tells the sprawling, Dickensian story of a great magical rivalry in early 19th century England. While so much fantasy that comes from within the SFF publishing and fandom culture has, for good or ill, remained largely imitative - many writers are trying to be either Martin or Pratchett, and the movies have persuaded some to try to be Tolkien again - it has taken a new crop of writers who haven’t necessarily cut their teeth within the culture and absorbed its tropes and clichés (and so many of them are British) to bring fresh ideas and approaches to fantasy at long last. In her debut, Susanna Clarke knocks it out of the park and into low-earth orbit. It’s no surprise that the back of the dust jacket features a fawning quote from Neil Gaiman this is precisely the kind of book he’s been trying to write all his career. Breathtakingly original, it defies conventions and expectations at every turn while you get to sit back and watch its story unfold with a big fat smile on your face. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is the best fantasy novel of its year, perhaps of the last several years. Seriously, this woman must have ignored every human being around her, as she cranked out novel after novel after novel. Zilpha Keatley Snyder was an American writer who had an almost inexhaustible writing career. Now I'm hoping Zilpha Keatley Snyder's ghost shows up, too. Probably.Īll I know is that I am in that same weird position again. Was this because Shirley Jackson's work leaned toward the supernatural? I don't know. No, more specifically: I wanted to hang out with her ghost. Let me clarify: I did not wish to raise her from the dead and sit with her, and learn from her (a natural feeling I have, with several beloved authors). When I discovered Shirley Jackson's work, a few years back, I had the unique experience of wanting to find her ghost somewhere and coax her back to my house for visits.
